Our first Science Fair in Primary 3rd - 6th

What is Science? This is the first question we ask the students when we start Science in 3rd. Look around, feel, hear, taste, smell things  we say, everything you see and things you don't see, we use science to understand.

Throughout these 4 years the students explore, experiment, make models of our anatomy, recreate volcanoes, chemical mixtures, learn the properties of physics, electricity and other forms of energy, oh so many things.... we could go on and on. The students not only learn but enjoy the wonders of our world because of Science.

We, the teachers agree with the following quote:

The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new discoveries, is not 'Eureka!' but 'That's funny...' Isaac Asimov

WE want our students to believe that

"Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge." Carl Sagan

“We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.” Stephen Hawkings 

So because we strongly believe that science is so important for everyone we declared May 13th our Science Fair Day.

We all received a “science badge” to start off with an identifying element.

This being our first year, we didn't want to be too ambitious so we limited the scientific range to:

3rd- Science of the FUTURE. They had to apply their scientific knowledge and imagination to new inventions they would like to see in the future.

4th-6th: A famous scientist.  

The students' work was amazing. The majority of the students really threw their heart into this project and they taught us a lot about some scientist.

Representatives of each class were chosen and they had to present their information, in the auditorium, to all the students and teachers from 3rd to 6th. Two classes did a type of pantomine/ recreation of teh life of a scientist, the others did an oral presentation backed up with a power point . 

We were so proud of them and how they worked together and / or presented their work. The information was undeniably interesting and diverse.

But if anything, the bottom line was that CURIOSITY is the basic ingredient to be a scientist, and as we all know, these students have a lot of that.

Our first Science Fair was fun, entertaining, educational and interesting. A great hit.
